Mohit Saraf featured on the podcast, “The Leader’s Edition,” hosted by Nitin Potdar (Former Senior Partner, JSA)

What does it take to build a law firm for the next generation – not the merely the next financial year?

A thoughtful and wide-ranging conversation on ambition, institution-building, leadership and the courage to take calculated but bold decisions for the long term.

Our Founder & Managing Partner and Co-Chair, Corporate Law Committee, FICCI, Mohit Saraf, recently joined Nitin Potdar, (ex Senior Partner, JSA) on The Leader’s Edition for a candid conversation about his journey through nearly three decades at the forefront of the Indian legal profession — and, more importantly, the vision that led him to establish Saraf and Partners.

At the heart of the conversation is a simple but powerful idea: a law firm should ultimately become larger than its founder.

Mr. Saraf speaks about the ambition behind Saraf and Partners — to build an independent, professionally managed institution, bringing together outstanding lawyers and practices under one platform while retaining the entrepreneurial spirit, ownership and excellence that make great lawyers successful.

The discussion also explores an increasingly important question for the Indian legal market:

Must every successful boutique remain independent forever?

As the profession evolves, Mr. Saraf sees an interesting opportunity for high-quality boutique and smaller firms to combine with larger institutional platforms such as Saraf and Partners — creating greater scale, deeper capabilities and stronger client offerings, while giving boutique founders and their teams the opportunity to participate in building something significantly larger.

Done thoughtfully, consolidation need not mean losing identity or entrepreneurship. It can mean multiplying their impact.

The conversation goes beyond growth and mergers, exploring the realities of building a law firm, the balance between independence and scale, leadership and succession, and what young lawyers should look for in a firm.

Ultimately, it raises a larger question for the profession:

Will the next chapter of Indian legal services be shaped by individual practices, or by institutions built to endure across generations?

A conversation worth reflecting on, whether you are a senior lawyer, a boutique founder considering the next stage of growth, or a young lawyer starting out.
